From Reykjavík we drive through the tunnel in Hvalfjörður / or in the botton of the fjord – Whale Bay where convoys from the United States sheltered during WW II on their way to Murmansk and Europe.
A whaling station is now being operated again in Hvalfjörður.
We drive through a mountain pass into the valleys of Skorradalur and Lundareykjadalur and cross a numbers of the best salmon rivers in Iceland.
We make a stop at Deildartungurhver, a geothermal spring from where 180 l/sec of boiling hot water flows from and generates heating for most of the surrounding area and the village of Akranes.
We find ourselves now in one of the most historic sites of Iceland, the place where the famous writer Snorri Sturluson lived from 1206 – 1241. Among his writing is Heimskringla. Archaeological research has been carried out in this area with several interesting findings.
In Reykholt we also find a beautiful church which houses Snorrastofa, a center for medieval studies.
We then drive to look at the wonderful waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss and from there to Húsafell where we find ourselves on the outskirts of civilization.
Húsafell offers a unique view of glaciers, sands and mountain scenery.
We then head for the farm of Kalmanstunga farthest of the farms of Borgarfjörður. Then we pass the lava field of Hallmundarhraun, visit the Glanni waterfall among other interesting places and head for Borgarnes. There we are in the midst of the saga area of Egils Saga, one of the most famous Icelandic Sagas.
An interest place to visit is of course the Settlement Center located in Borgarnes. An opportunity for refreshments is available at the Center and then we head back to Reykjavik.
