We arrive in Mýrdalur where there are ample opportunities to watch the birdlife at the Dyrhólaey promontory, (120m), and Reynisdrangar as well as enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery and glacier view to our left.

From here we pass Mýrdalssandur the Eldhraun lavafield (565 km/2) which ran from the volcanic device Lakagigir eruption from 1783 – 1784. This eruption is believed to have been one of the causes of the French Revolution due to the poisonous ash-fall in Europe and damage to livestock and crop.

It is estimated that the eruption caused some 9,000 deaths in Iceland amounting to some 20% of the population.

The final leg of our tour takes us over the wasteland sands of Skeiðará. The rivers of Skeiðará were not bridged until 1974 thereby completing the ring road around Iceland. Again there are a number of places of interest to see and we have an excellent view to the mountains and the glaciers before we arrive at our destination at Jökulsár lagoon. The area of Skaftafell is a spot of great natural beauty and one of the country´s national parks.
