The mysterious Snæfellsjökull Glacier is one of the main energy centers on earth and from there a great number of famous writers have sought inspiration. Jules Verne and Halldór Kiljan Laxness, the Nobel Prize Laureate among them. The surrounding are of the glaciers is a national park with many spectacular geological formations.
A slumbering volcano under the glacier and lava fields bear witness to a lot of volcanic activity in earlier times.
Rare birds like the white-tailed eagles are also to be seen in this peaceful area. The arctic tern favors the area of Arnarstapi and Rif for their young.
The first municipalities in the northern hemisphere to join the Green Glove agenda are situated here, recognizing sustainable tourist services as the way forward.
The coastline bear witness to how people struggled to survive and there are active and interesting small fishing villages to visit in the Snæfellsjökull peninsula.. An information center and hotel is available at Hellnar.
There are many extraordinary geological formations within the national Park, magnificent coastlines and mountain range with high rugged peaks and birdcliffs and towering over everything is Snæfellsjökull Glacier, an active strato volcano.
An interest place to visit is of course the Settlement Center located in Borgarnes. An opportunity for refreshments is available at the Center and then we head back to Reykjavik.
