The old parliament site of Þingvellir is our next stop where we will step out to the edge of the gorge of Almannagjá.
This offers an excellent view over Lake Þingvellir and the site of our ancient parliament Alþingi, the oldest parliament still existing, founded in the year 930. The National Park of Þingvellir is registered since 2004 with UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
We visit the old parliament site by an easy walk down to Lögberg – The Rock of Law. Other stops in this area include Drekkingarhylur, Höggstokkseyri, Brennugjá og Flosagjá.
Laugarvatn is our next stop, tiny village there we find Fontana, where you can relax in warm geothermal pools and natural steam rooms.
Geysir is next stop. The international term for spouting springs “geyser” derives its name from the most famous of them all Geysir in Haukadalur. While dormant now for most of the time another nearby smaller geyser Strokkur spouts regularly with a few minutes interval.
At Geysir is located both an exellent restaurant, a shop with Icelandic handicrafts and souvenirs as well as an information center
Now we are heading for Gullfoss – The Golden Waterfall, 32 m. High. We find ourselves there at the outskirts of civilization and have a view of a beautiful mountain ring and the Glacier, Langiökull
On our route back to Reykjavík we pass by the craters at Seyðishólar and Kerið, driving on the Grimsnes lavafield.
Kerið ( Crater ) is a 3000 year old explosion crater, 55 m. deep with a lake at the bottom. Famous artists have held concerts, including Björk and the opera singer Kristján Jóhannsson.
Kambabrún offers a view of the Westman Islands to the south of Iceland and a view of the Ölfusá River.
